The National Highway Authority of India had extended the deadline to January 15th.The prepaid rechargeable tags were supposed to roll out by December 15 this year, but the deadline was extended by a month due to a shortage of tags in the market.
Govt has temporarily relaxed an earlier mandate for 100% electronic toll collection on National highways. “Depending on the traffic pile up at high traffic volume fee plazas, not more than 25% may be temporarily converted to hybrid lanes,” the ministry told NHAI.
The sale of FASTags has crossed one crore mark, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday while announcing his ministry will carry out massive campaign to make people aware about the new system of collecting toll.
The toll collection across national highways has increased by nearly 15% since the government pushed mandatory use of FASTags. Sources said the average daily revenue has crossed Rs 80 crore against earlier average of Rs 65-68 crore in July and August.
